May 1997 -- How do you ride the ups and downs of a wild economy?  Ask Al Lowe.  In the last 10 years, the Los Angeles-area remodeling market has seen a deep recession, followed by a boom, and now steady growth.  Lowe has survived by developing a company that highlights service and a pleasant construction experience.

Currently Lowe is concentrating his efforts on commercial and industrial work that makes up about 70 percent of his business and often includes seismic upgrades.  He also does residential remodeling, which includes window and door replacements, kitchens and baths and room additions.

To stay flexible, Lowe markets to a broad clientele.  He spends a lot of time networking with commercial real estate brokers.  Through them he can reach building owners, find out which tenants want to do improvements and who's looking to sell.  As part of that networking, he offers services to brokers they may not get elsewhere.  For instance, if a broker has a client who is interested in a space, Lowe will provide a construction budget within 48 hours.  That puts Lowe in the picture much earlier than his competitors.

Three times a year, Lowe sends a newsletter about construction trends to his target market.  He highlights certain types of projects "so that someone will feel we're addressing their specific business," he says.
